This Illinois client, a major player in the agricultural sector, relies heavily on large, specially designed silos for their storage needs. These silos ensure the quality and safety of their goods. With multiple facilities throughout Illinois, this client has six large silos that require both interior and exterior painting. Due to the considerable height and confined spaces, this project required meticulous adherence to safety protocols and specialized painting procedures.

Requested Maintenance

The client required a comprehensive interior and exterior coating service for its six large silos, addressing both standard and specialized coating requirements for the food and agricultural industries. The key drivers for this project were to maintain high safety standards, extend the life of the silos and comply with industry-specific coating specifications to ensure the safety and integrity of the stored goods.

Scope of Work

Workspace Containment: Thorough masking and containment of the workspace.
Power Washing: Power washing all surfaces with a 6,000 PSI power washer to SSPC-SP-1 standards for contaminant removal.
Rust Removal: Removing pack rust using power tool cleaning methods.
Primer Application: Applying a primer coat of PPG Amerlock 2-part epoxy at 5-6 mils DFT (dry film thickness).
Top Coat Application: Applying a top coat of PPG Pitthane 2-part urethane at 3 mils DFT.
Sealant Replacement: Removing failing chime seal on the tank bottoms and replacing it with polyurethane sealant.

Our team was required to follow strict safety protocols for exterior work and hold confined space certifications for interior work. With NACE-certified specialists overseeing the process, we ensured that the coating specifications were meticulously followed.

To ensure superior adhesion and longevity of the coatings, we began with a 6,000 PSI power wash to remove any contaminants. Power tool cleaning was used to remove stubborn pack rust and strengthen surface integrity prior to priming.

The choice of PPG Amerlock epoxy and PPG Pitthane urethane coatings was pivotal. These high-performance products, applied with precision, guarantee robust protection against the elements and operational wear and tear.
