Client and Facility Overview

An asphalt plant located in Indiana operates in the commercial industry and focuses on the production and handling of asphalt materials used in road construction and maintenance. The plant contains various high-temperature equipment, including piping, a baghouse, and a galvanized steel silo. The equipment operates under extreme temperatures, with some parts reaching up to 500 degrees.

Requested Maintenance

The plant required painting and coating of various high temperature equipment. This included painting ductwork and the baghouse, and sandblasting followed by painting a galvanized steel silo.

Decision Driver and Timing

The primary driver for the project was the need to apply highly durable coatings to equipment exposed to extreme temperatures to extend equipment life and maintain operational efficiency.

Scope of Work

Equipment Preparation: Sandblasting of the galvanized steel silo to prepare the surface.
Primer Application for High-Temperature Areas: Application of a zinc-rich primer to the ductwork and baghouse, approved for up to 1200 degrees.
Top Coat Application: Following the primer, an industrial urethane topcoat was applied to the ductwork and baghouse. A Myo-aluminum primer and industrial urethane topcoat were applied to the silo.

The entire project was completed in eight days, on time and on budget. This efficiency ensured minimal disruption to the plant's operations.

The use of high-temperature coatings, such as a zinc-rich primer and industrial urethane, was critical as the equipment is exposed to temperatures of up to 500 degrees. These specific materials were selected for their proven durability in such harsh conditions.

Special attention was given to the galvanized steel silo, which required sandblasting to ensure a clean and suitable surface for the Myo-aluminum primer and subsequent industrial urethane topcoat. This process was essential to maximize adhesion and performance of the coating system.
