Client and Facility Overview

Our client, an agricultural company in Roanoke, IL, operates a grain storage facility. This facility houses 16 large metal grain bins that are essential to maintaining the quality and supply of grain to markets and processors. In addition, it features a complex conveyor system that connects the bins and ensures efficient grain management.

Requested Maintenance

The client was looking for a comprehensive maintenance solution to address the severely chalky surfaces of their grain bins. The priority was to remove existing deterioration and apply a durable coating that could withstand harsh environmental conditions and extend the life of the bins.

Decision Driver and Timing

Surface chalking can lead to aesthetic issues and larger structural problems, which is particularly concerning when the bins are used to store commodities like grain. The maintenance work needed to be prompt and thorough to prevent any potential issues down the line and protect the quality of the stored products.

Scope of Work

Power Wash: A 6000 PSI power washer was used to thoroughly clean the grain bins. Dirt, oil, grease and other contaminants were removed.
Power Tool Cleaning: Removed pack rust, surface rust and old paint, preparing the surface for the new coating.
Epoxy Coating: Applied a base coat of Sherwin Williams Macropoxy for heavy-duty protection.
Urethane Topcoat: Completed with a coat of Sherwin Williams White Acrolon Urethane to provide a durable, weather-resistant finish.
Conveyor belt painting: Applied two coats of SPI Rust Grip to the conveyor belts connecting the bins.

Notable Details

To complete the project, a combination of aerial lifts and swing stages was required. This specialized equipment was essential for gaining access to and effectively working on the high and difficult-to-reach areas of the grain bins.

Using high-pressure power washing and power tool cleaning, we ensured that all contaminants were removed, providing a clean and stable surface for the new coatings. This thorough preparation is crucial for the longevity and effectiveness of the protective coatings applied.
