How Anti-Graffiti Coatings Work

Graffiti on commercial and industrial buildings is an annoying and costly form of vandalism. While this isn't incredibly common in rural areas, it does happen in many of the cities where we work in the Midwestern states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa. Since being reactive to graffiti isn't the best policy, we often tell our customers to proactively try to stop it or minimize its effects. Here are some options.

Urethane Clear Coat

A great option is Urethane Clear Coat, which is a Low-VOC paint that is graffiti resistant. That is, it prevents the graffiti paint from sticking to the structure's surface. It can be used on pipelines, trains, bridges, water tanks, and so forth. If someone happens to tag your structure, a power washer and/or solven wash can help clean the graffiti off the structure.

Sacrificial Coating

This type of coating is different from Urethane Clear Coat. When a graffito tags a building painted with a sacrificial coating (also a clear coat), a power washer can be use to remove the tag. But, here's the catch: as you probably guessed, the sacrificial coating will come off along with the tag. A new sacrificial coating will then have to be applied to the surface.

Remove Graffiti Immediately

Another thing that commercial or industrial businesses facility managers can do is remove graffiti immediately. It's a bit like psychological warfare. If a graffito tags a building, and see that it is removed that day or in the following days, he will be less likely to tag it again. And then will hopefully move on.
